Low-Fat Veggie Treats Recipe

Before we get into the recipe, I want to give you a few tips to make it a little easier. There are a few tricks I have learned when it comes to working with rice flour. The first is to always use finely ground, or stone-ground rice flour. In my experience, the stone ground has the perfect texture for baking.  If the rice is not fine, the flour will not absorb the fluid. The second tip is that sometimes it helps to let the dough sit for a few minutes before rolling it out.

Letting the dough sit is not required, but it gives the rice flour time to really absorb the liquids and allows your dough to hold together better.  When you are rolling out multiple sheet treats, the easier the better.

This made about 2 ½ dozen treats. So, it is perfect if you have multiple dogs. Store them in an airtight container, and even though they look dry, keep them in the refrigerator. I hope your dogs love them as much as mine. Keep reading after the recipe for some other veggies that you can try in these treats (along with their benefits)

Good veggies to use in this dog treat recipe

  1. Carrots:  an excellent source of fiber and beta-carotene, which helps maintain healthy eyesight in dogs.
  2. Spinach:  packed with vitamins and minerals, including iron and calcium, which can help support healthy bones and teeth in dogs.
  3. Sweet Potatoes:  a great source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, and beta-carotene, which can help regulate blood sugar levels and support healthy digestion.
  4. Peas:  a good source of protein and fiber, and can help support muscle growth and development in dogs.
  5. Zucchini: a good source of fiber and vitamin C, and can help support healthy digestion and boost the immune system in dogs.
  6. Cauliflower: a low-calorie vegetable that is rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and potassium, which can help support a healthy heart and improve overall health in dogs.
  7. Pumpkin: a great source of fiber and can help improve digestion in dogs, especially those with gastrointestinal issues or constipation.

These are far from the only vegetables dogs can eat. They’re just the best ones for this particular recipe. You want something that mashes up (or shreds) pretty well and is easy to incorporate into the dough. Things like Brussels sprouts and broccoli are good for dogs, but they don’t really work as well in this recipe.
