CBD comes in various formats, and CBD treats for dogs can help with various emotional and physical issues. However, not all CBD treats are created equal, so we recommend all pet parents know what to look for in a CBD treat, how they work, and what to stay away from.
If you do a Google search for ‘cbd treats for dogs,’ you’ll get millions of results. There are thousands upon thousands of products available making promises to help your dog. They aren’t all the same.
Your head might be spinning at this point. We did the heavy lifting for you and will share the facts, details, and what CBD treats we use with our dog.

What To Look For In CBD Treats For Dogs
One of the main things to look for when choosing a CBD treat for your pup is the utilization of a full-spectrum hemp extract. This means when the plant is processed, the extraction facility extracts all the beneficial cannabinoids from the plant, including CBD.
Some of the other things to look for in a CBD product for your dog include:
- 100 percent human-grade
- Sourced from reputable USA-based farm(s)
- Certificate of Analysis to show the amount and type of cannabinoids in the CBD product.
- Tested by third-party laboratories with results easily available online
- Stringent labeling guidelines
- The manufacturer monitors and evaluates their products in real-time
- Use of supercritical CO2 extraction method to ensure no toxic solvents are used in processing
- Certified USDA organic hemp
- Seal from the National Animal Supplements Council (NASC)
- No heat used in the production process
Fact: A low-quality CBD treat may not have active CBD or as much as their label claims. Some manufacturing processes can leave trace chemicals behind. Always do your homework because your dog is worth it.
How Does CBD Differ From Marijuana?
CBD and marijuana both come from the cannabis sativa plant. CDB contains no psychoactive effects commonly seen when ingesting THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. Hemp is grown to have a very low THC element. On the other hand, marijuana is grown to have higher THC concentrations. Your dog should never have marijuana.
Pets and people have an ECS, or endocannabinoid system. When your dog consumes a high-quality CBD treat, it activates his ECS. The ECS then instigates a two-way communication going between the dog’s brain and other parts of his body (like the nervous system, digestive system, and others).
CBD treats can help many different canine conditions and parts of your dog’s body because of this two-way communication system. Marijuana, which contains high concentrations of THC, can cause toxicity to dogs. THC causes a high while CBD does not.
“In dogs and cats, THC is processed differently, and the compound is actually toxic,” says Veterinarian Ivana Crnec. “That is why all pet CBD products are made exclusively from hemp and not from marijuana. The research on the use of CBD in dogs and cats is ongoing. However, based on current information, CBD can help alleviate inflammation & pain, reduce anxiety, and manage seizures.”

How Can Pet Releaf Brand CBD Treats Help My Dog?
Dogs get stressed out for a lot of reasons – separation anxiety, thunderstorms, fireworks, cars that backfire, being around other dogs, etc.
Pet Releaf recommends administering your dog’s dosage about an hour before a stressor will occur, such as a thunderstorm or fireworks display. It is hard to predict when a dog will be upset, as life is unpredictable, which is why they recommend daily use.
I recently discovered a helpful way to use CBD treats from Pet Releaf with my Cocker Spaniel, Alvin.
My dog is not fond of having his legs groomed or nails clipped, yet he is perfectly happy and relaxed for the rest of grooming. I groom my Cocker Spaniel at home. Here’s the Pet Releaf protocol we used with success (he’s 24 pounds):
- Pet Releaf Stress Releaf 300 mg oil with dropper. I administered ¾ (0.75 ml) of a dropper around two hours before his grooming session.
- I administered another ¾ of a dropper about 30 minutes before clipping his nails and grooming his legs.
- One Pet Releaf Stress Releaf edibite during the grooming session as a reward and to further enhance the effects.
Using Pet Releaf’s product finder, you can easily determine which Edibite is best for your dog.
When you look at a bag of Pet Releaf Edibites, you’ll see a milligram breakdown. For example, in a 7.5-ounce bag of Stress Releaf Edibites to support calm behavior and overall wellness, each chew contains 3 mg/CBD per chew; the whole bag contains 90 mg/CBD per chew.
If your dog has occasional issues or needs a bump to his hemp oil, Pet Releaf recommends using the edibites. Edibites can also be used independently following the dosing instructions on the packaging.

Can My Veterinarian Recommend CBD Treats?
Whether your dog is struggling with a specific health issue (i.e. immune disorder, arthritis, seizures) or is in perfect health, Pet Releaf products can be very beneficial. However, any sort of addition to your dog’s diet should be cleared with your veterinarian first.
CBD products are not FDA-approved, but that doesn’t mean they don’t work. Science is proving that the right CBD products can benefit dogs.
As of this writing, veterinarians cannot prescribe CBD to their patients, but they can have an honest discussion with you about it. They can also refer you to a holistic veterinarian for further conversation.
A 2018 Farm Bill loosened restrictions on hemp-derived CBD and removed it from Schedule I designation. However, restrictions still exist on the ability of veterinarians to recommend or prescribe CBD. The law and regulations both federally and by state are not crystal clear.
Veterinarians may also hesitate to recommend a product in case they get it wrong and fear legal repercussions.
Dr. Jerry Klein says that when it comes to CBD oil, “the popularity and marketing is outpacing the researching and regulation.” This statement emphasizes the importance of talking to your veterinarian before using CBD for your dog.
Why Do I Need To Talk To A Veterinarian About Giving My Dog CBD?
You should always check with your dog’s veterinarian before administering CBD products. I recently learned that CBD inhibits a chemical in a dog’s body called P450, which metabolizes most drugs. If your dog takes any sort of medication and depends on it being metabolized to work, CBD could make it ineffective or worse. If your dog takes other medication, talk to your veterinarian first.
In the same way grapefruit can cause interactions with human mediation, CBD oil can change the way some medications or supplements are metabolized in dogs. This includes, but is not limited to, dogs who take steroids, allergy medications, liver or kidney medications, NSAIDs, heart medications, or anxiety medications.
What Issues Can Pet Releaf CBD Help My Dog With?
Many pet parents reach for CBD products to help their dog with pain or anxiety. Maybe your dog has noise phobias, as my Cocker Spaniel, Dexter did.
Maybe your dog has some memory or dementia issues and has trouble sleeping. Because CBD impacts the activity of the messengers in the endocannabinoid system, it can help.
Here are a few other ways Pet Releaf CBD can help your dog:
- Aggressiveness
- Anxiety
- Pain
- Arthritis
- Loss of appetite
- Inflammation
- Seizures
- Allergies/itchiness
Why Do I Like Pet Releaf CBD?
Each dog is different, and how your dog will react to CBD products are based on a lot of things including his size, overall health, behavior, and physiology. There is no guarantee that a CBD will work for every single dog in the same way.
When I decided I wanted to try CBD products many years ago, I chose Pet Releaf. I know that CBD products build up over time, so a high-quality chew and oil is mandatory. How quickly you will see a response varies as well.
Here’s why I like and use Pet Releaf CBD products on my dog:
- They pass the tests for everything a high-quality pet CBD product should have as listed above.
- Their edibles contain more potency per chew
- Edibites have a two-year shelf life
- Various flavors and selections for dogs
- Free of pesticides and herbicides
- Grown on farms in Colorado with sustainable and regenerative practices

FAQs
I prefer to wait 30 minutes before feeding my dog if I give him Pet Releaf oil. This allows some of the cannabinoids to bypass his digestive system and liver, so more compounds get absorbed into his system.
Pet Releaf has its own FAQ page.
There is a lot of misinformation being reported. According to the New York Times, dogs are getting sick from discarded joints and other cannabis products in places where recreational marijuana use is legal.
Most pet parents report sleepiness as a side effect in some dogs.
